Ernest (Ernie) and Elizabeth (Betty) met when they were very young children in Cimarron, N.M. He was a playmate with Betty’s older brother John. Ernie is the second youngest of six children. Ernie’s father Ignacio, worked for the Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad. Betty is the youngest of four children. Betty’s father Louis worked in the coal mines as an electrician. The mines closed when Betty was only 7 years old and her family moved to Dawson, N.M. where her father worked for The Phillips Dodge Corp. as an electrician in the mines. The mines closed in 1950 and Betty’s family moved to Raton, N.M. where she graduated from Raton High in 1952.
When the railroad closed the line, Ernie’s family moved to Maxwell, N.M, for three years and than Ernie’s father was transferred to Raton, New Mexico, Ernie finished his last three years of high school and graduated from Raton High in 1949, After high school Ernie was drafted in the Korean War and was stationed in New Jersey for two years and trained as a high-speed radio operator, When Ernie returned home to Raton, a good friend of the family Andy, had set him up on a blind date, it helped that he had the car, They went to the St, Patrick’s Day Dance at the Crystal Lounge in Raton where Betty wore a beautiful green dress she had ordered from “Seventeen” magazine, They hit it off at once, but one week later Ernie had to leave for Oakland, where freed of.london brown pointe shoes his older brother Tony had got him a job at Owens Illinois Glass Co, as a mold repair man..
Betty and Ernie corresponded back and forth for a year before Betty came out to California. Ernie and Betty married on March 5, 1954 in Oakland, where they made their home. Tragically, Ernie was taken from them due to illness when he was only 3½ years old. In 1982 they were married at St. Leonard’s Catholic Church in Fremont. Larry worked as a deputy sheriff for Alameda County. In 1983, Ernie and Betty became the proud grandparents of a beautiful baby girl, Desiree’ and two years later in 1985 they once again became proud Grandparents of a adorable baby boy, Larry Jr. Ernie and Betty were very involved with their grandchildren. They were known as “Grandma Betty and Grandpa Ernie” to Desiree’ and Lil Larry’s friends and teammates. They were at games every weekend as their grandchildren grew up.
