Mozian plays Seymour, the shy, awkward, kindly florist clerk who is the protagonist in the comedy horror, doo-wop, rock ‘n’ roll, Motown-flavored, campy musical written by Howard Ashman (book and lyrics) and Alan Menken (music). Directed by Scot Schneider, “Little Shop of Horrors” tells the tale of Seymour Krelborn who works in a drab flower shop on New York City’s skid row. The shop is leaning towards closing its doors, until Seymour brings in an odd, unidentifiable, exotic plant he discovered after a “total eclipse of the sun,” and places that plant in the window. Sales boom. Seymour’s co-worker is Audrey, a pretty young woman with low self-esteem who Seymour secretly adores. Seymour names the plant after her, Audrey II, or “Twooey. The flower shop boss is Mr. Mushnik, a failure of a florist, who nevertheless recognizes that Audrey II is making the chimes ring on his cash register.
Seymour realizes early on that Audrey II is some sort of Venus flytrap-like plant, when the greenery with jaws catches a few drops of blood from Seymour’s cut finger and grows, That plant keeps growing throughout, and once it starts talking, red ballet flats it is loaded with street-smarts, a fair amount of funk, and some really fatal ideas, This Terra Nova spring musical has all the right stuff to make its cast sing, Along with the genius of director Schneider, there is the soaring music direction by Michael Pens, joined by his band of 11 Terra Nova “symphony” virtuosos, Choreographer Giamaica Zeidler has created hip and technically tight dance numbers, constantly underscoring the story and the play’s chorus line of hoofers are breathtaking, Vocal coaches Bianca Lucia, Cyndi Caldwell and Ilon Glasman’s brilliant hard work shows and Paul Kwapy’s set design will amaze..
As Seymour, Joey Mozian is fantastic as he charms, and nerds, and sings like a glorious angel. The role of Seymour’s love interest and shop mate Audrey is shared by two actresses, Kaitlin Caldwell and Lauren Arnest, who are both mesmerizing, both able to reach in deep. Caldwell is like a young Bernadette Peters. Lauren Arnest is like a young Pat Benatar. Anders Chippendale is the potted monster of alien greenery, Audrey II, and he is one, deep soulful voice of wickedly good badness. Ethan Glasman is Audrey’s jerk of a boyfriend, and he oozes with comic villainy, and also perfectly steps into the heels of a lineup of other comic characters.
Then there are the three street urchins, Crystal (Mary Mullen), Ronnette (Dani Rideu-Shafer) and Chiffon (Jaden Rhodes), who are the narrators of the play, strolling through the chaos with the impeccable harmonies of a Chiffons-style girl-group, These ladies know how to sing together, but each is given a solo and Mullen, Rideu-Shafer and Rhodes are each a vocal powerhouse, The role of Mr, Mushnik is shared by actors red ballet flats Xavier Campbell and Alex Ruiz, and both play him right on, commanding and humorless, Grant Gomez is the Puppeteer and he is king of synchronization..
