As the title suggests, intense moods prevail in the trio of works that will be presented. The program’s highlight is Czech choreographer Jiří Kylián’s Return to a Strange Land, a piece for six dancers with a most painful background. Kylián conceived Return nearly four decades ago as a tribute to his mentor, Stuttgart Ballet director John Cranko, who died suddenly on a company flight home to Germany from America. Return is set to early 20th-century piano solos from a song cycle by composer Leoš Janáček, a fellow Czech who created the melancholy tunes to mourn the passing of his own daughter.
The Bay Area premiere of Return took place last October with Smuin, which knows firsthand the devastation of unexpected loss, Founder Michael Smuin died cast of ballet shoes of a heart attack in 2007 while teaching a company class, XXtremes’ sunny side is represented by Dear Miss Cline, a 2011 work by Amy Seiwert, choreographer in residence and a former Smuin dancer, The romping salute to country music pioneer Patsy Cline includes 10 of her classics, including “Walkin’ After Midnight,” “Come On In” and “She’s Got You.”..
Last on the program is Smuin’s Carmina Burana, set to Carl Orff’s same-named cantata. The work, which ends with the rip-roaring “O Fortuna,” is a celebration of life, lust and joy at the same time that it “mourns the cruelty of fate.” It’s a fitting coda to XXtremes and a showcase for the company, which has always embraced bold expressiveness and fearlessness. Celia Fushille, Smuin’s artistic and executive director–and onetime principal dancer–is merely carrying on a proud tradition.
